FIREWOOD
We now have a limited supply of seasoned firewood and coppice products from a local privately owned woodland. We are now managing this beautiful ancient woodland in a sustainable and traditional way. All of the wood that we use has come from windblown trees and the traditional practice of coppicing.
Coppicing is the term used to describe the rotational cutting of the `underwood` in a traditionally managed woodland. This wood has large trees called `standards`, of mainly oak and ash. These trees grow to between 70 and 150 years and are then cut, as timber, for planks, boards or posts. If not felled these trees tend to blow over (windblow), which is a natural process and allows more space and light to reach the other trees, which then grow on to take the place of the fallen giants. The underwood in this wood is mainly hazel, with birch, ash, holly, cherry, crab and occasional field maple. These are the species that are coppiced (cut) to a stump every 8 to 25 years in rotation. The stump (stool) then re-grows and produces the next crop of small useable poles. These coppice stools can be hundreds and sometimes over a thousand years old and are the oldest trees in the woodland. The regular cutting of these trees promotes long life and renewable, sustainable wood.
We produce local, sustainable, air seasoned (not kiln dried), hardwood firewood, for delivery within a 10 mile radius of Sudbury. Our firewood is sold in 2 cubic metre loads and dried below 20% moisture content, as per regulations. We can deliver larger loads at a discounted rate while stocks last.
